SFU Progressives Accomplishments 2021/22 on the SFSS Board Caucus
The Progressive Caucus stands by the Charter of Beliefs on Various Campus issues and wish to work with the community to grow the student movement.
Over the last year, so much has been done, but there needs to be much more work done to defend student power on campus.
- Win Fossil Fuel Divestment at SFU in solidarity with SFU350 and other allies
- Amplified and Advocated for motion at Senate for at least 15 Black Faculty Cluster Hiring
- Amplified community to help push SFU to launch National Charter for Anti-Black racism on campus
- Center Equity and Justice as a Whole in decision making at SFU
- Successfully Pushed for SFU to go online learning amidst COVID-19 spike and center student Safety
- Worked with SFU to establish the VP People Equity and Inclusion position
- Advocated for the Accessible Course Practises canvassing countless students and push for remote option and class recordings
- Advocate for COVID-19 safety in the classroom and the SFU community
- Successfully advocated for the Gondola endorsed at the Burnaby City Council
- Pushed to support Palestinian Liberation and directed the development of policy
- Support actions in Solidarity with Wet'suwet'en and Land Defenders in Fair Creek
- Extended Community Support amidst BC Flood victims
- Successfully advocated for No Interest Rates on Student Loans Federally during COVID-19
- Stood against Weaponization Student Conduct Policy against student protestors and getting SFU to back down in defence of students
- Hired the First Student Advocate to help with student appeals and advocacy - 3 years in the making s/o to Shina Kaur and Osob
- First DNA Accessibility Coordinator and SOCA BSSC Coordinator to serve Black and Disabled Students on campus
- Successfully Collective Bargaining with the SFSS Employees
- Supporting community fridge and food access on campus
- Hired over 15 positions at the SFSS in line with the SUB opening and celebration
- successfully lobbying the provincial government to eliminate interest on the provincial portion of student loans, saving graduates an estimated $22 million in 2019/2020;
- Lobby the provincial government for $5 million in funding towards open education resources (OERs), of which $3.26 million was pledged in 2019;
- Advised the provincial government on the housing affordability issues faced by SFU students, resulting in a $73 million loan being allocated towards building on-campus student housing at SFU, providing an additional 1,971 beds;
- Successfully recommending that the Canada Energy Regulator revise Condition 124 of the Trans Mountain Expansion project to incorporate stakeholder consultation into the Emergency Management Program for the project;
- Being recognized by the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Canadian Minister of Accessibility, as the first university in Canada to meet with members of the Canadian government in Ottawa to advocate for students with disabilities;
- Working with other BC student associations, postsecondary institutions and TransLink to renew the U-Pass program until 2025, ensuring rates are kept affordable for students;
- Lobbying the provincial government to reintroduce upfront, needs-based grants for students, resulting in the new B.C. Access Grant that provides 40,000 students up to $1,000 a year for four-year programs; and

The Progressive Caucus stands by the Charter of Beliefs on Various Campus issues and wish to build power across student governance bodies within SFU.
Over the last year, so much has been done, but there needs to be much more work done.
Over the last year, candidates and organizers who believe in our values were able to:
- We had 800 students attending the Annual General Meeting and ushered in a condemnation vote of Tuition Increases in the middle of the pandemic by SFU
- Piloted new funding models for Clubs and Student Unions
- Passed COVID relief fund for students at a value of $150,00
- Won Pass/Cr/NC for students through advocacy to senate and pushing for improvements
- Pushed successfully joining the Don't Forget Students Campaign for COVID relief funding for students and won the Canadian Emergency Student Benefit (CESB)
- Worked with Migrant Student to win work permits for graduating International students essentially stopping thousands of deportations
- Implemented roll call votes so students know how their board members stand on their votes and not behind secret ballots
- Passed motion to support Black lives and support redistribution and support community safety initiatives as an alternative form of public safety that's safer for marginalized communities and to limit RCMP recruitment on campus
- Supported Students with SFU Athletic Team name change and the Our Decision campaign
- Push SFU to provide culturally relevant and racially sensitive student services support for Black and Indigenous students
- Pass motion to support COVID-19 relief on behalf of students
- Put to referendum the question to divest from fossil fuels for good
- Restructured the administrative layer of the SFSS to make it more student directed
- Launched the Students Deserve Space campaign and won memorandum of understandings between faculty student unions, student unions and their departments and programs at SFU
- Created plan to have specific supports for Accessibility Coordinator and Black Students Support Coordinator as well as a Campaigns and Mobilization Coordinator
- Won the push for a VP Equity position at the University level, as well as instituted one inside the SFSS
- Cut union-excluded administrative costs in half
- Consulted students to make sure their voices were heard and that they did not lose the UPASS on campus
- Provided space in the SUB for the Rotunda groups and signed the subleases for the independent student organizations
- Re-establish the FIC agreement

SFU Progressives Accomplishments 2019/20 on the SFSS Board Caucus
The Progressive Caucus stands by the Charter of Beliefs on Various Campus issues and wish to build power across student governance bodies within SFU.
Over the 2019/20 year, with just a caucus of 5 folks out of 16 folks, there was a few wins that was important and set the stage for something bigger.
Over the last year, candidates and organizers who believe in our values were able to:
- Established List Voting Records of Board Members at Board Meetings through ratio

- Launched the Board Strategic Plan 2019-2021
- Made SFU Budget Consultation sessions better (multiple sessions for students, communicated widely) while disavowing the lack of Student input actually being instituted in the whole process as the University stood firm in the 2%/4% increases in tuition
- Endorsed and advocated for Tuition Freeze Now at SFU
- Lobbied for Affordable Education at Government level through campaigns such as Knockout Interest campaigns, needs based grants and elimination of MSP fees for international students
- Supported the successful Save The Shuttle Campaign
- Helped in the creation of Single Use Plastics Initiative
- Hiring a First Nations Students Association Coordinator
- Getting the process started to hire a student advocate to fight on our behalf
- Hosted a Federal Elections Debate with 300 people and Instituted a Federal Elections Get Out The Vote Campaign
- Passed motion calling for divestment of fossil fuels and created an an investment policy in line with that and endorsed the climate strike
- Launching a Gondola Working Group
- Collaborating with BC Campus for Open Education resources
- Accessibility Standard Policy passed at the Board table
- Endorsed the RA effort to Unionize with TSSU
- Creation of a Reproductive Rights Policy
- Launching a SFU Student Affordability Plan with GSS and SFU
- Passed motion to stand in solidarity with Wet'suwet'en and sign a joint letter with student unions across BC
