WHO ARE THE CANDIDATES? WHAT DO WE STAND FOR?

Picture
The President is to coordinate and serve as the leader for the organization. I have been very involved because I love talking to and working with students.

This past year, I got involved with a lot of efforts to build community, whether it be at the
GSWSSU, SOCA or the SASS, I have helped to amplify students in any way shape or form that I am able to do so. I want to bring this spirit of community to the SFSS and build on the work that progressive student activists and allies have done so far in a spirit of community and care.
I am running because I want to defend student power in solidarity, and a community of care, rest, joy and laughter matters to me

The VP Equity and Sustainability position is a position focused on ensuring that SFSS takes anti-oppressive stances on issues and further advance equity and social justice. This included ensuring equity training for staff, Council and members, having equity throughout our governance, as well as keeping connected with grassroots organizers

We deserve an intersectional, equitable, justice-seeking Student Society that will not comprise or back down on marginalized Student needs And we need all students joining in.
I am running because our movement and this campus needs to be accessible and understanding of the needs of all peoples

The VP Internal and Organizational Development will be the backbone of the governance and democratic structure of the SFSS.

My student union and Council experience have provided me with insight and experiences for how to bridge the gap between the SFSS and students. As your VP of Internal and Organizational Development, I will ensure that students are engaged, involved, and informed about the SFSS and its decisions.

The SFSS has an opportunity to be more modern, and be ready to strengthen the voices of students at every aspect of decision making of the Society.
I am running because the SFSS need stronger student connection

The VP University and Academic Affairs aim is to facilitate collective action and advocacy on matters related to the University. In my 3 years at SFU, I have witnessed and experienced the immense pressures students face. 2 years into the COVID-19 pandemic, students continue to experience unaffordable tuition, inaccessible learning options, and more.

In my time at SFU, I have volunteered for the British Columbia Council for International Cooperation, Ocean Wise, and am a project lead for The Year of the Salish Sea Project.

Post-secondary education isn’t easy or accessible. However, I truly believe that if we work collectively, we can push SFU to dismantle the barriers that so many students face.
I am running because students deserve someone who is empathetic and cares

The VP External and Community Affairs  is to facilitate collective action and work with external and community groups to build coalitions on issues related to student rights and social activism.

Online learning has been and is difficult, but being a part of different communities has made me feel welcome.

I want to create this type of energy when elected to be supportive and give back to these communities that have supported us during these times.

I am running because students need a community of care.

I am passionate about equitable access for migrant and marginalized communities and to have students on and off campus.

I served as a director in Simon Fraser Public Interest Research Group (SFPIRG)  providing grants and opportunities to students and as the VP Events for International Studies Students’ Association. Currently I’m an SFU Senator and CJSF 90.1 Radio show host. Furthermore, I have volunteered with the SFU SVSPO’s Active Bystander Network.

The SFSS has gone through many positive changes in the last two years with the SUB being finished, shrunk admin costs, and the new Council powers. Now, students need more support, more dedicated funds, and better benefits.
I am running because Students need our support!

- VP Finance and Services, Saima Chowdhury
